DFW hail season: the months that dent cars, and why the northern suburbs get hit hardest.

When does hail season actually run in Dallas–Fort Worth?
March through June, with April and May doing most of the damage, and a real but much smaller risk that can turn up in any warm month. North Texas is one of the most active hail regions in the country, and the calendar is unusually predictable even though individual storms are not.
The reason is a seasonal collision. Through spring, warm moist air comes north off the Gulf while cold, dry air still drops down the plains behind passing fronts, and the dryline sits just west of the Metroplex. Those ingredients build tall, strongly sheared supercells with the deep updrafts that hold a stone aloft long enough to grow to golf ball size and beyond.
By July the atmosphere over North Texas usually caps: hot, humid and stable at the top, which suppresses the updrafts that make large hail. Storms still happen, they just stop producing the stones that dent cars. The risk returns modestly with the autumn frontal season, which is why a September or October hail event surprises people but is not truly unusual.
County hail records reflect that pattern rather than any single bad year. Denton County has logged 86 hail days since 2010, 19 of them with stones two inches or larger, and a record stone of five inches near Sanger in June 2023. Collin County has logged 74 hail days over the same period, 20 of them at two inches or more, with a 4.5-inch stone near McKinney in March 2019. Dallas County records 88 hail days, with a 4.25-inch stone near Irving in May 2011.
- March: the season opens. Early events, often overnight, and often underestimated.
- April and May: peak. Most large-hail days and nearly all of the costly ones.
- June: still active, and the source of several of the largest stones on record here.
- July and August: low. Hot and capped, though not zero.
- September to November: a secondary frontal window, smaller but genuine.
Why does the Metroplex sit in such an active hail corridor?
Because the storms that make large hail form to the west and southwest and travel straight across it. Dallas–Fort Worth sits downwind of the dryline, at the eastern edge of the plains and the western edge of Gulf moisture, which is close to the ideal place to be if you want big supercells and a poor place to park a car.
The typical damaging track runs from the west or southwest to the east or northeast. Storms initiate near the dryline out around Parker, Palo Pinto and Jack counties in the afternoon, mature as they cross Tarrant and Denton, and are often at their strongest as they move over the northern suburbs during the evening. That geometry is why a storm on radar over Weatherford deserves your attention in Frisco.
The Metroplex also amplifies the cost of every event. It is a very large, very flat, car-dependent urban area with enormous quantities of open surface parking: office lots, retail lots, apartment lots, dealership lots. Nothing about that changes the meteorology, but it means an identical storm produces vastly more insured damage here than it would over open country.
Why do Collin and Denton counties tend to take the worst of it?
Because the northern suburbs sit where the storm tracks are still strong and the built environment offers the least shelter. Supercells crossing the northern half of the Metroplex are frequently at peak intensity over Denton and Collin, and the counties' own records show it: both log around twenty days with two-inch-plus hail since 2010, on par with far larger Dallas County.
Development pattern does the rest. Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Prosper, Little Elm and Denton grew fast and grew wide, with big-box retail, sprawling office campuses, apartment complexes with open parking and new-build neighbourhoods where the trees are still young and the garages are frequently full of everything but cars. A storm over that landscape finds thousands of vehicles sitting in the open.
There is no meteorological rule that spares the southern counties, and there have been severe events in Ellis, Johnson and Kaufman. But if you are looking for where the repeated, expensive, vehicle-heavy hail events land in this region, it is the northern arc from Denton across Collin.
Which DFW hail storms are the ones people still talk about?
Two dominate the conversation: Mayfest on 5 May 1995, and the spring of 2016. Both are worth knowing, because they set the expectations your insurer, your repair shop and your neighbours all carry.
The Mayfest storm of 5 May 1995 remains the benchmark. A high-precipitation supercell moved across Parker and Tarrant counties in the late afternoon and evening, dropping hail from roughly 4.5 to 11.5 centimetres, softball size, onto an outdoor festival crowd in Fort Worth, followed by flash flooding. The National Weather Service documented it as the most damaging non-tornadic thunderstorm in United States history at the time, with well over a hundred people injured.
Spring 2016 was the modern cost benchmark. CoreLogic put estimated losses from that season's hail events in Fort Worth, Plano, Wylie and San Antonio at 689.6 million dollars by mid-July, and hailstorms across Texas in March and April of that year caused more than four billion dollars of insured damage to homes and vehicles. The 11 April 2016 storm through Wylie and the northeastern suburbs is the one most North Texas drivers remember.

What does a typical season look like against a severe one?
A typical season brings a handful of severe hail days to any given county, most of them at or just above the one-inch threshold, with damage concentrated in narrow swaths a few miles wide. A severe season brings several two-inch-plus events, and at least one of them lands squarely over a dense suburb rather than over farmland.
That swath geometry is the part people misjudge. Hail cores are small. It is entirely normal for one side of Custer Road to be destroyed and the other side untouched, and for a neighbourhood two miles away to have no idea a storm happened. Whether a season is bad for you personally has as much to do with a few miles of storm track as it does with the season overall.
The practical reading of all this: treat March to June as the window in which your car needs a plan, and treat the rest of the year as the time to make that plan. Clear the garage in winter. Know your nearest public deck. Get warnings pushed to your phone rather than relying on the sky.
